Drawing on

I've been inspired more recently to paint with subdued colours - neutrals, complementary greys etc. I was looking at the work of Misato Suzuki this morning - I like her combination of pattern and flat expanse of colour:



So I've done my own little response in gouache:


I was feeling like doing something a bit Japanese-y after seeing The Hole in Mount Hakone, an exhibition by David Miles at the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery. It was a really interesting collection of images from existing collections and Miles' responses, plus bits of writing by Mike Jackson, that seemed to form a story about miners digging down deep through to Japan - quite dark and folk-tale based.
